Background
Hugh is a highly experienced climbing professional with over four decades of international rock climbing and mountaineering experience, specialising in technical climbing. His career has taken him across the globe, including representing his country at World Cup level competition in Japan. He has worked extensively with thousands of climbers and is strongly committed to teaching safe, efficient, and sustainable climbing practices.
He was one of the original founding instructors of the Climbing Instructors Association (CIA), now the Australian Climbing Instructors Association (ACIA), and continues to contribute to the industry as a current ACIA board member and Instructor/Trainer/Assessor (ITA). In these roles, Hugh is dedicated to fostering high professional standards and developing the next generation of climbing guides and instructors.
His expertise spans technical instruction, risk management, and group facilitation. Hugh’s extensive background in risk management includes qualifications and experience in Vertical Rescue, Paramedicine, and public safety. He has also contributed to the development of nationally recognised training packages for climbing guides and instructors and has been involved with the Victorian Vertical Rope Rescue Reference Committee. His professional background further includes conservation management and emergency services, along with advanced expertise in complex technical rigging.
Hugh has authored a number of published and unpublished articles and studies on climbing risk and safety, contributing valuable insights to the field.
He currently operates Arapiles Climbing Guides, a locally based training and guiding business, where he continues to share his extensive knowledge and passion for climbing with others.
